Staying Positive Through All The Negativity

In today’s world there is a lot of negativity that goes on in our everyday lives. It seems that you can not look anywhere without seeing some type of bad news. I like to stay informed about the happenings in the world around me but I also can’t handle a lot of negativity without it taking a pretty bad toll on me so I have things I do to help me stay positive or if I catch myself feeling a little blue things I do to put me back in a more positive space.

*Note: The things mentioned in this post are just things I do when I am feeling a little less than my normal positive self. This is not meant to help anyone get out of a medically diagnosed depression or anything of that sort. This is not meant to take the place of therapy or medication or medical advice. These are just my personal things that lift my spirits when I am feeling a little down. Also, any podcasts or things I list such as Blogilates or Yoga with Adriene, I am not affiliated with.

One thing that always lifts my spirits or reminds me that things could be worse and to be thankful for what I do have, are my dad’s words of wisdom. I realize that this strictly applies to me as far as my dad’s pearls of wisdom but I have a very close relationship with my dad and we communicate to each other every day, normally it’s just a good morning text and good night text but it can be a call or email, but my point is most every morning he will send me not only a good morning and a reminder that he loves me but also a little nugget of positive inspiration that my day can be whatever I make it. Even if typically not so great things happen, I can choose how to respond to that and can turn my day around if I so choose. Basically the point of most all of his texts are that I can choose whether to wallow in my own circumstances or persevere and make lemonade out of those lemons that life will inevitably throw at you sometimes.

So like I said, that one is more something that applies to just me as he is my dad but maybe you have a dad or someone like that in your life that could send some positive thoughts or messages your way when you get to feeling a little down. I’m a pretty happy, positive person most of the time I think and I can undoubtedly say I get it from my dad and I am thankful for his influence in my life every single day.

I also have a poster type thing that I have hanging in the hallway of my apartment that I see everyday and it has always been one of my favorite possessions as it is Marilyn Monroe and I love her and the quote itself has always really resonated with me.

Another thing I love is Friends. Ever since I can remember it has been my favorite TV show and continues to be. I know some people hate it and some people think it’s problematic, but I don’t care. It has taught me a lot and always makes me feel better. I can find a Friends reference for pretty much any moment in life and laugh just as hard at parts that I did the first time I watched it. Probably even more so now since I actually get the jokes rather than when I was young and did not always understand them. Although to be fair, it still takes me a while to get jokes sometimes (my boyfriend can attest to that). But I own all 10 seasons on DVD and since it’s on Netflix I always have it at my disposal and it really does make me feel better. My favorite episodes are “The One Where No One’s Ready”, “The One With Frank Jr.”, “The One Where Phoebe Runs”, and “The One With Unagi”. I really love them all but these ones make me laugh especially hard. So if Friends doesn’t do it for you pick your favorite show and watch an episode or two and maybe it’ll make you smile just a little bit.

Yoga is something that seems to work for me no matter what is going on. I have mentioned in a previous post that I follow Yoga with Adriene and it really has been one of the best things I have found and done for myself. There are videos for every situation and the way that she leads the videos feels much less like a teacher instructing her students but a friend that you’ve known forever. It was a blessing when I found her videos because I had always liked yoga but could never really connect to any other videos that I found and then one day I stumbled upon her videos and instantly felt at home. But as I was saying she has videos for literally every situation, there’s one for when you’re angry or feeling heartbroken. There’s one for when you have your period or when you’re feeling a little sick. There’s even one for when you’re hungover. So if you’re feeling just a little not quite yourself give one of her videos a try and I know that I always feel much better than before.

Rolling out my yoga mat always makes me feel better.

This is also something I referenced in a previous post but Pilates is something that can also help me better. I follow Cassey Ho and her Blogilates. She has such an upbeat, enthusiastic personality in all her videos that it’s a little contagious to not at least crack a smile. Also, I know I personally just feel so much better about myself after one of her videos because I feel strong afterwards. I have always been a relatively small person I am about 5’ 3” and have never been the strongest person but after I started her videos I felt stronger and more toned and I can’t help but feel better about myself afterwards.

Podcasts are something I got into recently probably about two years ago and really love them. I was doing a lot of driving at one point about 6 or 8 hours a day and that left me a lot of time to fill. Don’t get me wrong I definitely love cranking up the music and putting on my own little show but sometimes I like to listen and more likely than not laugh at the podcasts I choose to listen to. These were also super useful when I would drive 26 hours in a 4 day period to visit my boyfriend. Thankfully, I no longer have to make that drive as I moved in with him and now see him everyday. Although it was worth it every time to see him and I would for sure do it again if I had to. One of the best things about podcasts is that there are so many different types to choose from. There is every type of genre from comedy to true crime and science oriented ones to how to grow a successful business. I have a few that I listen to that I will share with all of you.

My favorites are Having Funlessness with Jen Kirkman, Ask Iliza Anything, and Office Ladies. The other ones I listen to are Anna Faris Is Unqualified, Bertcast’s Podcast, Bigfoot Collector’s Club, Congratulations with Chris D’Elia, Good For You, LadyGang, Lauren Conrad: Asking for a Friend, Mom Brain, and You Can Sip With Us. I listen to a couple others here and there if someone like Jen Kirkman or Jill Kargman is on a specific episode or something but the ones I listen to regularly are listed above. They are all normally good for at least a little laugh and give me a little spirit lift.

I LOVE The Today Show. I watch it pretty much everyday and it has become a part of my routine and it really puts me in a better mood. Especially the third and fourth hours. This one may be specific to just me but it does put me in a better mood.

For me another thing that puts me in a better mood, without ever a doubt, are my puppies. These little cuties never fail to put a smile on my face. From the wag of their tails when they see me to the kisses to the pets and playing, they never fail to lift my spirits. I am always thankful for my sweet little pups.

I can’t help myself but to keep slipping their cute little faces into as many posts as I can.

The last thing I have that can give me a little pick me up is a routine. I think like most people, I have a daily routine. I find that if I’m feeling down or a little anxious if I focus on my routine and go through it as I usually do, I instantly feel calmer and happier. This one I don’t normally have to do a lot because my days don’t usually change too much but when it does, as soon as I can get back to my routine, I am much better.

I hope some of these can help boost your mood if you’re ever feeling a little down. If you have things you do to give yourself a little mood boost, feel free to comment.
